Antioxidant Support

Antioxidant nutrients as part of a balanced foundation.

Your body has its own antioxidant defenses, and a colorful diet supplies more. High-dose antioxidant supplements have generally not proven protective, so this is best viewed as basic nutritional support.

What to look for

Vitamins C and E play antioxidant roles in the body. Large trials of high-dose antioxidant supplements haven't shown they prevent disease or extend life, so these are best viewed as basic nutritional support, not protection.

What the research supports

Recommended supplements

  • Vitamin CA water-soluble antioxidant that also supports immune function and collagen production.
  • Vitamin EA fat-soluble antioxidant; useful mainly at normal dietary levels, as high-dose supplements haven't shown protective benefits.
  • NACA precursor to glutathione, one of the body's main internal antioxidants.

Things to keep in mind

Large trials of high-dose antioxidant supplements have not shown they prevent disease or extend life, and some high doses may carry risks. Food-based antioxidants remain the safest bet.
